The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed November 16 for the rerun election into the vacant position of senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in Kogi State.
The seat was previously occupied by Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party until the Court of Appeal upheld the judgment of the tribunal which had earlier nullified his election on the premise that it was marred by irregularities.
It will be recalled that Smart Adeyemi, senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in the last national assembly elections for Kogi West, had approached the tribunal, praying that the election of Melaye be nullified and a rerun ordered or he be declared as the winner of the election.
Both the tribunal and the appellate court nullified the election and ordered a rerun in the entire senatorial district.
The election is expected to be a straight contest between Adeyemi and Melaye.
Coincidentally, Nov 16 is also set aside by INEC for the conduct of the gubernatorial election in the state.
