Lassa Fever: Ondo Govt to Monitor Burials

As part of the measures to curtail the spread of lassa fever epidemic in Ondo State, the state government has said that any occurrence of “sudden death “must henceforth be brought to the notice of health officials at the Local government area.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr.Wahab Adegbenro gave the directive at a meeting held with primary Health Care Coordinators in the 18 Local government areas of the state.

The commissioner emphasized that it became imperative that burial for the body of any “Sudden Death “must henceforth be Supervised by medical experts to prevent possible spread of the disease which according to him has recorded 27 Cases and six death in the state.

Adegbenro stressed the need for all stakeholders to rise up to the challenges as the health ministry has already mobilized its surveillance team across the state.

Speaking on some of the preventive measures, Dr.Adegbenro said: ” we must discourage our people from sun drying gari and other stable food by the roadside where rodents can contaminate them as well as warning underaged children against rat consumption.”

The Commissioner for Local Govt and Chieftaincy Affairs,Mrs Lola Fagbemi said enough fund would be released for advocacy and awareness campaign to curb the menace.
