Constituency Projects are not Individual Projects- Senate Spokesman.

The senate spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi has given more clarification on the funds set aside for constituency project by the National Assembly saying it’s a misconception and not a personal project as widely speculated.

Abdullahi made this known on Wednesday while appearing on ‘Inside Parliament’, a weekly program of African Independent Television (AIT).

He noted that constituency projects are for the benefit of constituents much as he argued that they are being used to correct the imbalances in the distribution of dividends of democracy thereby enhancing equity and balance.

“If the budget that will come to National Assembly is going to have an all encompassing provision that every constituent part of this country is already well taken care of, I’m sure the National Assembly will find it very difficult to do anything.

“But the practical situation on ground is such that when budget is brought, in many instances that is the very first time legislators are coming in contact with the budget document, and of course if you give me that bulky document the first I want to see is if my senatorial district Niger North is well taken care of, to what extent will the lives of my constituents are going to be impacted,” he said.

Senator Abdullahi further stated that if not for the constituency project many parts of the country will not have government impact.

“If these are not done there are many parts of this country that will not understand what they call federal government budget. Remember I’m a representative I have people who voted for me not only me even the president and our people who voted us expect you to attract some dividends of democracy”.

“I will give you a classical example, the road between Kontogora and Makera is in bad shape these are federal roads, so my interest will be how the road is captured, and when it’s captured I will also be interested in seeing who ever is involved in executing that project does that; Beyond that, remember they are other special needs because they are our citizens”. Abdullahi stated.

It will be recalled that while assenting to the 2018 Appropriation Bill, President Muhammadu Buhari had accused the national assembly of introducing over 6000 new projects into the budget estimate, completely different from what he had sent to them in November last year.
