A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday restrained members of Zamfara State House of Assembly from impeaching the Deputy Governor Mahdi Gusau.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the order while delivering a ruling in an ex-parte motion brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through its Lawyer, Ogwu Onoja, SAN.

The deputy governor has refused to follow in the footstep of his principal, Governor Bello Matawalle who dumped the PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Gusau also organised a political rally in support of the PDP recently which drew the ire of his boss and members of the state House of Assembly.

The lawmakers had threatened to impeach Gusau over the rally which they considered to be a threat to the security in the state in which they claimed he was involved.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/650/2021, the PDP had urged the court to grant its prayer in the interest of justice.

In his ruling, Justice Egwuatu ordered the defendants to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

He also stopped the house from impeaching its other members who are still in the PDP.

The judge directed the plaintiff to serve all the defendants in the suit before Friday and adjourned the matter until July 23 for a hearing of the motion on notice.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, APC, Senate President, Speaker of House of Representatives, Speaker of Zamfara House of Assembly, Governor Matawalle, and Chief Judge of Zamfara are 1st to 7th defendants respectively.
