Members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly have declared their support for the educational reform agenda of Governor Bala  Mohammed of the state.

The lawmakers made their position known when the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Usman Tilde, appeared before the House to explain the circumstances surrounding the sponsorship of students of public secondary schools for WAEC examination in the state.

The legislators  expressed their  satisfaction  with the explanations of the commissioner and acknowledged the commitment and determination of the present administration to bring the desired change in the education system that will benefit all in the future.

The lawmakers welcomed the policies introduced by Dr Tilde to complement the efforts of Governor Mohammed in reforming the education sector.

The lawmakers requested the commissioner to pay more attention to basic infrastructure in secondary schools, welfare of teachers as well as providing enabling environment for students to improve their capacity and performance.

Dr Tilde told the lawmakers that the law for sponsorship of students for WAEC was made in 2008 where it stated that the state government should sponsor only students who pass mock or any other aptitude test examination.

He attributed corruption as one of the factors responsible for the reintroduction of the policy by the present administration,  stressing that because of the removal of some corrupt elements and introduction of fingerprint capture machine, some persons are now sabotaging the government.

On the status of those who failed the mock, the commissioner said since they have reached SS3 they can pay and write for their examinations as already the state government had requested WAEC to extend the registration period.

Dr Tilde thanked the lawmakers for giving him the opportunity to appear and explain the situation, pledging to continue working hand in hand with the legislative arm in order to reform education in Bauchi State.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman, who presided over the plenary, thanked the commissioner for the satisfactory explanations on the matter.
