If the just concluded governorship election in Osun State could be regarded as a pointer to what is likely to happen in the 2023 presidential election, then the All Progressives Congress (APC) is in big trouble.

Osun, a state in the southwest stronghold of the APC, fell to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the governorship election held yesterday. The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP, the winner of the elections with 403, 371 votes, defeating the incumbent, PDP’s Adegboyega Oyetola, who polled 375, 027 votes.

According to the breakdown of the election results released by INEC, PDP won 17 local government areas, while APC won 13 out of the 30 local government areas in the state.

Fifteen parties participated in the contest, including the latest sensations Labor Party (LP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Despite the promises presumed to be held by these two parties, their miserable outings confirmed that even if they had merged as earlier rumored, they couldn’t have come third in the election.

Reports earlier claimed that sensing defeat, the strongman of southwest politics and presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, absconded from Osogbo, the capital city, to Abuja before INEC announced the results.

The Osun 2022 governorship election has proved wrong, pundits who claim that the whole southwest block is APC’s enclave.
