Reading Culture: Ondo Moves to Revive Schools’ Libraries

Library has been described as an integral aspect of effective teaching and learning process in schools and in the society, and also an intellectual warehouse and a place where priceless records are kept for both present and future references.

The Director, Ondo State Library Services, Mr. Bode Arawande, stated this during an on the spot assessment of libraries across the state.

He said in view of the importance of library to the educational development and the need to revive the disappearing reading culture has prompted the teams visit schools and local government libraries in the state.

The team first port of call was the southern senatorial district where it visited Baptist Grammar School, Ode Aye, Layelu High School, Daniken High School and Aye Community Library.

Ikoya Grammar School, Moribodo High School, Ilutitun,as well as the Council Library all in the Okitipupa Local Government area also played host to the high powered team.

In Ode Irele and Ese Odo Council areas, the team toured United Grammar School, Ode Irele, and Community High School, Kiribo where the Director Mr. Arawande, frowned at the non-functional library in nearly all the Schools visited.

In continuation of the assessment tour, the visiting team from the State Library Services inspected the Uso Grammar School library before moving to other schools in Owo local government.

Other Schools visited include Oludaye Grammar School, Oba Akoko, Victory College, Ikare, Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi and Community Comprehensive High School, Akungba- Akoko.

At the Central Senatorial district, Olua High School, Igbara-Oke, the Apostolic High School, Ilara-Mokin, Ilu- Abo High School, Eji-Oba High School, Oba Ile, Fiwasaye Girls Grammar School, Akure, were among the schools visited by the Director and his team.

Mr. Arawande who harped on the need for proper care and the use of Library to serve the purposes for which it was meant appealed to the Old Students Association of these Schools to always come to the aid of their schools.

According to him “I will like to call on Old Students Association in all Schools to assist their alma-mater in building and equipping libraries”
